People have many experiences and possessions in their life that shape them into who they are. For me, my truck became one of those things in my life that has helped me discover and experience things that directly impact who I am today. Where I reside, it is not too typical to see a Latin teen driving a lifted, diesel pickup. In doing so, I have broken a stereotype and perhaps strained a couple of necks, as people take a second look at the truck, and a flashing third turn of their heads, to see me in the driver’s seat! It has been fun to literally be in the driver’s seat that has allowed me to break social and cultural walls with this situation.
I chose the title, Duramaxin’ Auctor for my blog because the truck I own is called a Chevy Duramax. “Auctor” is Latin for author and originator. Although these seem to have nothing in common, they are directly linked by one person, me. Through cruising in my truck on Friday nights, I have surprised and encountered many people who at first were stunned to see that a minority would be driving this type of vehicle. What is interesting is that this truck has served as a vehicle/means to meet people. As an example, I met a group of Caucasian people at a gas station who were hesitant to speak with me at first because of the difference in cultures, but as soon as I walked over and said “hi” they warmed up to me as we discussed modifications that we have done to our trucks. Through experiences like these, I learned not to judge a book by its cover and to not always assume one thing because it could really be another. This is related to “auctor” because the content in the blogs will express our thoughts and interpretation. I originally build these thoughts, just as I was the originator in the buildup process of my truck.
